Symetrix 528E Voice Processor

The 528E Voice Processor was designed before your mother was born. OK, that may be an exaggeration for many of you. (No matter what her age, always tell your mother that she looks really, really young. Always.) The first version of the 528E hit the market in 1987. As is our style, over time, we continuously improved the 528E. For better rejection of RF frequencies we redesigned the mic preamp. We minimized noise in the EQ section. We switched to a toroidal power transformer to diminish hum.

It may have been luck. Or, it may have been the fact that we were the first to put a mic pre, de-esser, downward expander, parametric EQ and waveform symmetry filter all under one hood (at a reasonable price) and it all sounded better than anybody expected. In any event, what happened was, over time the 528E became ubiquitous in US radio stations. And even today we continue to sell more 528E’s than we ever dreamed possible.

Now here’s the bad part. It’s a digital world. Every year, analog components get harder and harder to find as their prices escalate and supplies diminish. We work hard to source the parts we need to build 528E’s. But the fact is, eventually, and we don’t know when, we’ll hit a brick wall and that will be the end of a legacy.

Please do your part. Always recycle. And… if you want to add warmth and color to your digital recordings and broadcasts then take action. Buy a 528E. Now. Before it’s too late.

The analog challenge. Reduce sibilance, minimize acoustic room noise, control dynamics, enhance intelligibility, make a radio transmitter happy.
The 6-in-1 analog solution. Mic preamp, de-esser, downward expander, compressor, 3-band EQ, voice symmetry.
The analog benefit. The addition of warmth and color to digital broadcasts and recordings.
It’s been a long, strange trip. Since 1987 we’ve sold tens of thousands of 528E’s. We didn’t know what we were getting into.
Sure, you can probably buy a DSP voice processor with pseudo analog presets. But it will never sound like a 528E.
