What is Boot Camp?
Boot Camp 1.1
Boot Camp is a free software
provided by Apple Computer to enable one to install the Windows XP
Home/Pro (SP2) onto an Intel-CPU-based Macintosh laptop or desktop
computer. Although Apple has written the software, they consider it to
be a beta product, and they do not offer any technical support in its
installation or use, other than a user's manual and online technical
articles.
In operation, whenever the user wishes to switch between operating
systems, they must reboot the computer. If one wishes to switch
operating systems often, this can be an inconvenience.
The Windows OS and any Windows data files are placed on a separate
partition of the hard drive, which Boot Camp creates during setup. This
partition may be on any hard drive as of the latest version of Boot
Camp (1.1 beta).
The user may copy files from the Windows side onto the Mac OS partition
when running Windows. However, by default, the user will not be able to
copy files from the Macintosh partition onto the Windows partition.
This situation arises because the default format for the Windows
partition is NTFS format.
The user may rerun Boot Camp and create a new Windows partition that is
FAT32 formatted, and then they may copy files from the Macintosh
partition onto the Windows partition. The disadvantage here is that
this partition is limited to 32GB or less.
The Boot Camp installation supports Microsoft DirectX graphics
acceleration for gaming, and users report excellent results when
running Windows-based high-end games.
