| Product Description
The widespread proliferation of surround sound has brought along with it the
need for repurposing, or "upmixing" legacy stereo titles for multichannel
release. In many cases, the original multitrack components may not be available
for remixing or it simply might not be feasible for economic reasons. The
question then remains: without access to the original multitrack components,
what is the best way to derive a meaningful surround upmix from the stereo
source? The answer, quite often, is the z-K6 K-Surround Processor.
K-Surround* is a patent-pending process for taking the ambience that's
present in a stereo recording and spreading it across the surround channels. In
this manner, the listener is completely enveloped in the recording's natural
ambience. The z-K6 creates upmixes that sound like they're occurring in a
natural acoustic space, with a sonic character portraying width, depth, and
texture. The process sounds incredibly natural, void of synthetic r e v e r b e
r a t i o n o r o t h e r colorations: nothing artificial is added. The z-K6
also gives control over derivation of a center channel from the stereo material,
with a frontal image whose sense of width and depth can also be manipulated. The
unit also has a number of features which are useful for surround monitoring,
including individual channel level controls, a master level control, channel
mutes, and channel solos. The features are incredibly useful in auditioning the
derived upmix.
The z-K6 can handle up to 24 bits at 96 kHz, with a 192 kHz upgrade coming in
Q3/2002. The unit also features TPDF dither and POW-r** wordlength reduction to
generate 24-, 20-, and 16- bit outputs.
