The Professional M5 is a notebook designed for serious music
production. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz CPU, a 120GB 7,200
rpm 8MB cache hard drive, 1GB of DDR2-667 RAM [expandable to 2GB], a
15.4" WXGA wide angle, non-glare screen that gives you visibility even
at off-axis points of view. The M5 comes with a recovery utility that
stores the system factory settings outside of Windows XP in a
host-protected area of the hard drive. This allows you to restore the
M5 to the factory even if the hard drive has been accidentally
re-formatted. The M5 has Gigabit LAN to improve workflow and play
projects stored on other computers via Ethernet; built in 8X DVD+/-RW
burner for archiving and much more. Ultimately, and perhaps most
importantly, it is the handiwork of Les Bateman, so you know it's going
to work perfectly.
The Professional M5 is a dream machine built for speed, durability, and
mobility. The beautiful, sleek design coupled with the overwhelming
power and speed makes this the best friend of the busy music producer
moving from studio to studio to home. The Professional M5 runs quietly
partly because it is built on Intel's Core 2 Duo for more speed with
less heat. The machine is specially tweaked for music production and
will run large projects in Cubase, ProTools, Sonar, Reason and others
like lightning. And you will operate your production schedule with the
peace of mind that comes from the industry's best backup and
restoration utility. Apart from being a top performer for music
software, the M5 is mainstream with everything you would expect like
USB 2.0, FireWire, Wireless LAN, PC Card Slot, etc. and other features
you may not, like Gigabit LAN, 8X DVD+/-RW and a 3-year warranty.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
The Professional M5 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU running on a
667 MHz front-side-bus architecture. The Core 2 Duo offers breakthrough
performances in mobile CPUs that will make most existing desktops look
like they are running in reverse. The secret is a revolutionary micro
architecture which delivers 2 processor cores that are optimized to run
multiple tasks in parallel. The result is more than twice the speed of
previous generations and 5 times the speed of a Powerbook G4. Add to
that a power consumption drop of more than 28% and you also have a much
quieter machine since the smaller, slower fans are needed to assist the
heat pipe in keeping things cool.
Mother of all Mobile Chipsets
The Professional M5 is built on the brand new Intel 945GM chipset which
delivers more performance while drawing less power. In fact, the 945GM
chipset draws 28% less power than previous generations. In graphics
this chipset delivers twice the performance and enables up to 25%
higher data transfer rates. Additionally, it features PCI Express x16
graphics ports and PCI Express x1 I/O ports, next generation Serial
ATA, and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity. The 667MHz front side bus and
support for DDR2 667MHz RAM makes this as fast, flexible and powerful
as server towers of just a couple years ago. The M5 is built on a
foundation that is technologically state-of-the-art.
1GB Crucial DDR2 667 RAM
The Professional M5 is equipped with 1GB of dual-channel DDR2 667 MHz
RAM. The RAM size and speed are critical to the smooth operation of
your music computer. The RAM speed can be a bottleneck even on systems
with high CPU clock speeds. Our selection of DDR2 667MHz means that on
this laptop, you won't be waiting on the RAM. The RAM is perfectly
matched to the front side bus. 1 GB of RAM is now essential for anyone
running large projects with dozens of tracks and also anyone running
virtual instruments that rely on large sample libraries. Running that
30GB orchestral library? No problem with the Professional M5. This is
what it was designed to manhandle.
120GB Serial-ATA Hard Drive
The Professional M5 separates itself from other notebooks with a 120GB
Serial ATA hard drive that is sure to tame even the densest project. An
8MB cache buffer, 7200-RPM spin speed, 900G shock tolerance and
Seagate's QuietStep technology makes this drive fast, durable and
quiet. The Serial ATA interface allows 1.5Gb/s interface speed for
blazing fast transfers. The 7200-RPM speed delivers almost 800% more
performance than 4200 HDs while maintaining low power consumption. This
means the Professional M5 will glide through large projects with over
100 tracks and not choke due to the 12.5 msec average seek time of the
hard drive. Don't try this with just ordinary laptops.
8X Dual Layer DVD Optical Drive
The Professional M5 ships with an 8X CD/DVD+/-RW recordable optical
drive that does it all. Not only does it whip through CD authoring
tasks, it also allows for backups of your audio projects to dual-layer
DVD discs. This optical drive records data up to 4.7GB per side on DVD
media and writes in all kinds of formats: DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD-RAM
and CD-R/-RW. The Super-Multi also reads most DVD and CD formats,
including DVD+R/+RW. This adds up to one versatile drive suitable for
any application. Buffer Under run Protection and UltraDMA support
ensure fast, reliable writing every time. Supported formats include:
DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW
Very Quiet Operation
Each generation of computing technology ups the ante with respect to
speed in all areas, this speed comes with a price - heat. To keep
things cool, some computers employ an army of fans and we all know that
this only brings with it an army of noise. The Professional M5 uses
hard drives with SoftSonic FDB motors which deliver virtually inaudible
operating acoustics. A heat-pipe on the CPU conducts heat away from the
CPU using simple convection so everything remains quiet - the way you
want it.
Tweaked for Music
The Professional M5 is heavily 'tweaked' for music production. This
means that the services that are not needed for music are disabled and
ones needed to optimize performance for music production and intensive
hard disk recording are enabled. With a MusicXPC there is no need to
make any adjustments. Simple unpack this dream machine, install your
software and start making music. The Professional M5 is tested
extensively with ProTools 7, Nuendo 3, Cubase 4, SONAR 6, Reason 3, FL
Studio 6, Melodyne 3 and many others. Just make music.
Ports Galore
The Professional M5 covers every type of connection that music
producers need now and in the near future. There are 3 USB 2.0 ports on
the side of the laptop (instead of the rear) thereby protecting the
ports from damage caused by lifting the front of the laptop. There are
VGA, FireWire and Gigabit LAN ports on the sides also. There is a line
in, a microphone in, line out, S-video port, modem, and even a built in
camera for teleconferencing. But wait . . . there's more . . . a PC
Card Slot keeps the M5 compatible with the PCM-CIA world, Express Card
Slot ties it to the future with EC54 and 34 support and the 4-in-1
media card slot makes it a computer for every application.
Host Protected Backup/Restore
The Professional M5 sets itself apart from all other music computers
with the inclusion of an almost magical backup/restore facility with
the power to turn a nightmare of tears into a sigh of relief. You can
easily survive major computer horrors and crashes by restoring the
computer in minutes rather than weeks. How is this possible? A special
section called the Host Protected Area [HPA]is created on the main hard
drive specially to hold the original factory image as well as future
user created backup images. This is followed by the installation of the
Windows XP section of the drive. The HPA is "Hidden Zone" invisible to
the Windows OS and cannot be erased or tampered with by normal
operations. This preserves and protects the backups and factory images
from damage, accidents, viruses and deletions. Even if you format the
main hard drive, the HPA is immune - it cannot be deleted. The music
producer can easily survive a fatal computer crash by invoking a
restore procedure to a previous image stored in the HPA.
Creative Freedom MusicXPC takes the trouble out of making
