RME AVB Tool Mic Preamp, Router & Converter

Product Highlights

  • 4 High-Precision Line/Mic/Hi-Z Inputs
  • 128 MADI I/O
  • 8-Stream Gigabit AVB
  • 128 Audio Channels over AVB

The RME AVB Tool is a tool that takes four analog audio sources and converts them to digital signals that can be streamed over Ethernet AVB or MADI. It offers four XLR-1/4" inputs that can accommodate signals from Hi-Z instruments, microphones, and line-level sources. It also offers two 1/4" line outputs and a headphone output.

On the digital side, you'll find MADI offered over BNC or optical (over SFP) connections, as well as an Ethernet port for up to 128 channels of AVB. You'll also find clocking I/O over BNC connections.

The analog section offers a professional, pristine sound, with up to 75 dB of gain in 1 dB steps, as well as an input line-level sensitivity of +18 dBu. Each input can be switched to handle signal from DI guitars, line-level keyboards, or microphones.

On the AVB side, you can make use of eight streams in AM824 or AAF formats. The two MADI sections can run independently, or can be mirrored to facilitate redundancy. You can control the unit from the intuitive front panel, which offers a prominent encoder knob and multiple buttons. However, you can also control the unit over any network, wired or wireless, using RME's web-interface control. A power supply is included.

High-Grade Analog Inputs
The AVB Tool is a pristine analog converter featuring the most commonly found analog signals in a control room, recording studio, or stage: four XLR-TRS combo inputs, with a remote-controllable gain-range of 75 dB in 1 dB steps, as well as an input line-level sensitivity of +18 dBu, a stereo headphone output, two analog line-level outputs, and a switchable +4/+19 dBu reference level.
Redundant MADI
Seamless redundancy is available for all MADI signals, whenever the secondary MADI port is mirrored with the same signal as the coaxial MADI input. If redundancy is not required, an optional optical single-mode or multimode MADI module is treated as an individual MADI I/O with full bandwidth.
8-Stream Gigabit AVB
8 AVB streams are available in AM824 (legacy AVB) or high-performance AAF (MILAN compatible) formats, with configurable size and format per stream. Up to 128 audio channels can be sent and received over AVB in total across all streams.
Versatile Control
Control the device directly from the front panel with an encoder and buttons for direct access to all features. You can also control the AVB Tool via a web interface on any network link (including Wi-Fi), allowing for the rapid creation of gain groups, phantom-power switching, and routing signals to headphones for monitoring. The integrated routing matrix allows you to routing any analog inputs, including all digital signals and AVB streams, straight to the headphone output. Problem-solve signal, clocking, connectivity, or other issues in a straightforward manner.
SteadyClock FS
In digital audio, the clock frequency is an essential factor, as it creates the correlation between the audio bits and the time reference. Unfortunately, the clock frequency is not always as stable as desired. The AVB Tool offers full SteadyClock FS performance to ensure lowest jitter and highest jitter immunity. This helps to optimize recordings and mixes because the soundstage has more depth and clarity.
