The Golden Age Premier GA-47 is a handmade large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone designed to deliver a tone inspired by the renowned U47 studio microphone for vocalists, musicians, and recording engineers in home, project, and commercial studios. Its 35mm capsule features a 27mm 6-micron Mylar diaphragm coated in gold and allows operation in a cardioid or omnidirectional polar pattern. The 140 dB maximum SPL and wide frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz ensure full-range capture of sources ranging from quiet vocals to loud drums.

The carefully selected components include an NOS Telefunken 800 Series tube, a Ciarit coupling capacitor, a BV8-clone dual-bobbin transformer, and gold-plated connectors, the sum of which is a sound that aims for the essential qualities of a vintage U47. The supplied XLR 7-pin proprietary mic cable boasts 99.99% pure oxygen-free copper, Teflon insulation, and high braid density. The GA-47 includes a power supply, shockmount, wood microphone case, and tweed-style flight case.

Sturdy Housing

The microphone body is made of brass to ensure long-lasting durability. The grille, a key component affecting the mic's tonal character, is made of iron.

Carefully Selected Capsule

The capsule for the GA-47 is designed to provide the requirements of modern day recordings by mixing the character between a vintage K47 capsule and a K67-style capsule with a wide frequency response and high sensitivity. Being dual-sided, it provides the GA-47 with both cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns. For each production run of 50 GA-47 units, approximately 200 capsules are evaluated in order to find 50 capsules with specifications that lie within the tight tolerances defined by Golden Age Premier.

Capsule Specifications

The 35mm-diameter capsule has a brass backplate and is mounted on a 7mm-thick aluminum plate in a way that minimizes the impact of physical vibrations. The membrane, made of 6-micron Mylar coated in gold, is 27mm in diameter. The capsule's front and back sensitivity values do not differ more than 0.3 dB. Capsule-to-capsule sensitivity variances do not exceed 0.5 dB. The capsule is specially designed to complement the electronic circuit of the GA-47 to achieve a frequency response curve with a pleasant balance between the high, middle, and low frequencies.

Low-Noise Tube

The GA-47 uses an NOS Telefunken 800 Series low-noise pentode tube connected in triode mode in order to decrease distortion and noise. This tube is a modern glass derivative of the VF14M used in the vintage U47.

Vintage-Style Transformer

The GA-47 transformer is especially designed with a 6.5:1 dual-bobbin transformer by a reputed transformer factory. Made of high-quality core material, it is a replica of the BV8 transformer used in the vintage U47.

Capacitors and Resistors

A Ciarit axial coupling capacitor, the same type used in the famous B&W Nautilus loudspeaker, is made in the United Kingdom from MKP material with copper pins. It has a delicate, full sound and a wide frequency response. Other capacitors used are low-loss MIAL polystyrene film capacitors. The resistors are Allen Bradley carbon film resistors made in the USA.

Mic Interior and Cabling

The electronic circuit is built mainly with point-to point wiring and the ground connections are tied together using an insulated soldering. Teflon-insulated, silver-plated copper wire is used for the internal connections. All solder points are made with Mudorf Msolder Supreme SilverGold solder.

PSU Transformer and Electrolytic Capacitors

The vintage-style power supply uses a high-power, R-style transformer with a low noise level and a minimal stray field. The electrolytic capacitors are high-quality, audio-style units. A simple and effective circuit uses dual-stage filtering for the filament voltage. The high voltage is precisely filtered and stabilized using an ON Semiconductor zener diode.

Proprietary Microphone Cable

The XLR 7-pin cable is produced using 99.99% pure oxygen-free copper, teflon insulation, tinfoil, and 98% knitmesh with a high braid density. The connectors are gold-plated for enhanced conductivity.

Design Details

The GA-47's circuit is similar to the U47, but the component values have been adjusted to fit the EF800 tube. To maximize sound quality, no coupling capacitor is used between the capsule and the tube, just like in the classic U47. The addition of a zener diode keeps the voltage and current stable. All three connectors, which utilize gold-plated pins, are placed on one side to facilitate ideal handling and placement. The polar pattern switch is located on the power supply to allow easy sound comparisons.
